Core Setup

Getting Started & Project Hub

Learn how to create projects, open local/external folders, import archives, and configure your initial workspace.

How do I create or open a project in TeXAnt?

From the Project Hub, you can start from a blank folder, pre-built templates, connected cloud storage, Git, or ZIP archives.

Folder: Create a new local project in a directory of your choice on your device.

Template: Choose from 16 curated templates, including multilingual starters for 11 non-Latin languages (Arabic, Persian, Urdu, Simplified Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Vietnamese, Hindi, Marathi, Thai with font chip pickers and one-tap font installation), an Exam class with grading score tables and `\printanswers` answer keys, theses, articles, reports, and Beamer decks.

Cloud Storage: Open projects directly from your connected cloud provider (iCloud Drive, Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, Box, Yandex Disk, or Amazon S3).

Clone Git Repository: Clone remote repositories over HTTPS using personal access tokens (GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket, Overleaf).

Import Archive Project: Import packaged projects directly from `.zip` archives via Tools → Import / Export.

Recent projects can be sorted by Last opened or Name directly from the home screen.

Keywords:#project hub#create#template#clone#zip#import

Where are my files stored, and how does storage permission work?

TeXAnt is strictly local-first. Documents reside either in the app sandbox or in persistent external directories you explicitly choose.

Local Sandbox & External Folders: You can store documents inside the app’s Documents directory or open existing folders from the iOS Files app or Android Storage Access Framework (SAF).

Security-Scoped Bookmarks (iOS): When you pick a project folder from the Files app (such as iCloud Drive or external USB drives), TeXAnt maintains persistent access so you can edit, compile, and run Git without re-selecting it.

Clean Workspace Mode: Enable in Settings → Behaviors to hide intermediate compilation artifacts (such as `.aux`, `.log`, `.synctex.gz`, `.toc`, `.out`, `.bbl`, `.fls`, `.fdb_latexmk`) from the file tree, keeping your project organized.

Keywords:#storage#files app#security bookmarks#clean workspace#sandbox

How do I rerun the First-Launch Setup Wizard?

You can revisit the 10-step onboarding wizard at any time to switch languages, UI themes, default storage, or font packages.

Open Settings → About → App & Subscription and tap Rerun Setup Wizard.

The wizard allows you to reconfigure interface language (25 supported languages), app and editor themes, package bundles (Minimal, Recommended, Extended), and storage defaults.

Rerunning the setup wizard is completely safe: it does not delete your documents, projects, or credentials.

Compiler

Typesetting & Local Engines

Master on-device compilation, LuaHBTeX vs LuaTeX, Full vs Fast compile modes, Safe mode time limits, and multi-file roots.

How does true on-device offline compilation work?

TeXAnt embeds complete native builds of the LuaHBTeX and LuaTeX engines directly within the binary—no cloud server needed.

Unlike web-based editors that upload code to remote build servers, TeXAnt compiles your LaTeX sources entirely on your device’s local CPU.

There is zero upload latency, no queue waiting time, and total privacy: your manuscripts, equations, and images never leave your hardware.

Compilation works seamlessly in airplane mode, high-security lab networks, and remote field locations without any internet connection.

Keywords:#offline#engine#compilation#luahbtex#luatex#privacy

What is the difference between LuaHBTeX and LuaTeX (Plain)?

LuaHBTeX is the modern default with HarfBuzz text shaping, while LuaTeX (Plain) is reserved for low-level plain TeX.

LuaHBTeX (Default): Integrates the HarfBuzz shaping engine directly into LuaTeX. It is the gold standard for modern OpenType fonts, bidirectional text, and complex multilingual scripts (such as Arabic, Hebrew, Devanagari, and CJK). When compiling standard LaTeX documents, the log normally shows `format=lualatex`.

LuaTeX (Plain): A lightweight environment for plain TeX documents that does not load standard LaTeX macros.

You can switch engines in Settings → LaTeX Settings → TeX Engine.

Keywords:#luahbtex#luatex#harfbuzz#plain tex#engines

What is the difference between Full compile and Fast compile?

The play button is a split button supporting Full compile (clean state) and Fast compile (warm cache with multi-pass convergence).

Full compile (Resets auxiliary files): Deletes previous auxiliary files (`.aux`, `.toc`, `.out`, `.bbl`, etc.) and runs convergence from scratch. This guarantees a clean state but takes more passes for documents with bibliographies and tables of contents.

Fast compile (Keeps auxiliary files): Retains valid auxiliary files from the previous compile. Because LaTeX truncates and rewrites `.aux` on every run, newly added `\label` and `\cite` keys are preserved and resolved in significantly fewer passes.

Automatic Safety Gates: If the previous compile had an error, or if an `.aux` file is structurally corrupted, TeXAnt automatically cleans auxiliary files and falls back to a clean compile.

Set your default mode in Settings → LaTeX Settings → Compile button default.

Keywords:#full compile#fast compile#auxiliary files#convergence#split button

Why did my compilation stop after 10 minutes (Safe Mode)?

Safe mode protects your device battery and memory from runaway infinite loops in untrusted projects.

In projects you haven’t explicitly marked as trusted, TeXAnt enforces a 10-minute compile time limit to guard against infinite macro loops (such as runaway recursive definitions or broken TikZ loops).

At the 3-minute mark, TeXAnt displays a prompt allowing you to tap Continue to lift the time limit for that single compilation run.

To disable this safety check, toggle off Compile time limit in Safe mode in Settings → LaTeX Settings, or trust the project from the Project Hub.

You can also halt any running compilation immediately by tapping the Stop button in the compile menu.

Keywords:#safe mode#timeout#continue#infinite loop#stop compile

How do multi-file projects and root documents work?

TeXAnt seamlessly compiles master projects containing \include, \input, or \subfile commands from any open sub-document.

Specify your master file by placing the standard magic comment at the very top of your child `.tex` files: `% !TEX root = ../main.tex` (fully compatible with TeXShop, TeXstudio, and VS Code).

Resolution Precedence: TeXAnt resolves the compilation root strictly in order: 1) Inline `% !TEX root` directive, 2) Project-level main document setting, 3) Default `main.tex`.

When editing any chapter or sub-file (e.g., `chapters/intro.tex`), tapping Compile compiles the master document and updates the shared output PDF.

SyncTeX correctly correlates line numbers in sub-files directly to their exact page and paragraph in the output PDF.

Authoring

Editor, Touch Keybar & Typography

Configure touch accessory bars, autocompletion, bracket matching, Vim keybindings, LTR/RTL text, and auto-save.

How do I use the dedicated LaTeX Keyboard Bar on iPad and tablet?

The custom touch bar docks right above the on-screen keyboard for single-tap insertion of common LaTeX operators and symbols.

Quick-insert backslashes `\`, braces `{ }`, brackets `[ ]`, superscripts `^`, subscripts `_`, math delimiters `$`, and symbols without switching keyboard layers.

Enable or disable the bar in Settings → Editor → LaTeX Keyboard Bar.

For hardware keyboard users (Apple Magic Keyboard, Smart Keyboard), standard desktop shortcuts are supported: `⌘B` (compile), `⌘R` (fast compile), `⌘S` (save), `⌘F` (find & replace), and `⌘D` (multi-cursor).

Keywords:#keybar#keyboard#shortcuts#magic keyboard#touch

How do smart autocompletion and synchronized environment renaming work?

The editor provides preamble-aware command autocompletion and automatic matching of \begin{...} and \end{...} tags.

Preamble-Aware Autocomplete: Suggests commands, environments, figure/table `\ref` labels, and `.bib` citation keys as you type.

Synchronized Environment Renaming: When you modify the tag in `\begin{equation}`, the matching `\end{equation}` updates simultaneously in real time.

Bracket Pair Colorization & Indentation: Visual rainbow color pairs make deeply nested formulas and environments easy to read at a glance.

Code Folding: Fold sections from `\part` down to `\subsubsection`, as well as complex environments like tables and figures.

Keywords:#autocomplete#bracket matching#environment rename#code folding

Does TeXAnt support Vim keybindings and Right-to-Left (RTL) text?

Yes, full modal Vim editing, complete app-wide RTL interface layout, and per-line automatic bidirectional text flow are supported out of the box.

Full App RTL Layout: Selecting Arabic, Persian, or Urdu transforms the entire application interface into a right-to-left layout. Directional navigation icons mirror, the project sidebar drawer slides in from the right, and input fields align natively.

Per-Line Automatic Text Direction: By default, the editor dynamically evaluates each line: LaTeX command structures flow LTR, while Arabic, Persian, or Urdu prose flows naturally RTL. LaTeX commands and macros are isolated as protected LTR blocks (`bidiIsolates`), and the line number gutter shifts to the right side.

Vim Mode: Turn on modal navigation (`Normal`, `Insert`, `Visual`) under Settings → Editor → Vim Keybindings.

Spell Check: Multi-language spell checking highlights misspelled words with contextual correction popovers.

Keywords:#vim#rtl#arabic#persian#urdu#hebrew#bidiIsolates#text direction

How does Auto Save and the floating quick command button (⌘) work?

Configure automatic file saving policies and access rapid editor commands via the floating ⌘ tool.

Auto Save Policies: Set to `After Delay` (500–3000 ms, default 800 ms), `On Focus Change` (switching tabs), or `On Window Change` in Settings → Behaviors.

Floating Quick Command Button (⌘): A draggable overlay icon docked over the editor providing quick access to common actions. You can reposition it or turn it off in Settings → Behaviors → Show Floating Quick Command Button.

Continuous vs Paged: Choose between vertical smooth continuous scrolling or discrete single-page flip mode in Settings → PDF & Viewer → Layout.

Two-Page Spread (iOS): Inspect book layout balance with side-by-side spreads and an optional standalone cover page—ideal for iPad proofreading.

Reading Themes: Switch the PDF viewer background between Normal, Night Mode (inverted dark tones), or Sepia (warm paper tone for eye comfort).

Keywords:#continuous#two-page spread#night mode#sepia#book view

What is the difference between Disk Mode and Memory Mode (Base64)?

Disk Mode saves standard PDF files, while Memory Mode speeds up live tablet preview by bypassing disk I/O.

Disk Mode (Default): The engine writes the output directly to a `.pdf` file in the project folder. Best for multi-file projects, external syncing, and permanent storage.

Memory Mode (Base64 - iOS): The compiler streams raw PDF bytes directly into RAM as a Base64 payload, updating the viewer with zero disk write overhead.

Select your preferred mode in Settings → PDF & Viewer → Layout → PDF Output Mode.

Keywords:#disk mode#memory mode#base64#performance#pdfkit

Can I export PDF/A archival documents and suppress sensitive metadata?

Configure PDF/A compliance profiles (1b to 4f) and fine-tune metadata suppression for blind peer reviews.

Package & Font Management

Understand automatic CTAN downloads, Ready Bundles, custom archive installation, and font cache management.

A package or font is missing. How do I install it?

TeXAnt automatically reads compiler error logs, identifies missing .sty or font files, and offers a 1-tap CTAN installation.

Automatic Resolver: When compilation halts due to a missing package (e.g., `! LaTeX Error: File 'microtype.sty' not found`), TeXAnt detects the dependency and displays a download prompt. Tapping Install downloads and extracts the package from CTAN mirrors, then immediately resumes compilation.

Manual CTAN Search: Open Settings → Package & Font Management → Install → Install from CTAN to search any package name from the Comprehensive TeX Archive Network.

An internet connection is required only during the package download itself; once installed, compilation remains 100% offline.

Keywords:#sync#auto sync#sync on save#wifi only#background

How does TeXAnt handle file conflicts during cloud sync?

Four conflict resolution policies prevent data loss when files are edited simultaneously across multiple devices.

Ask User (Default & Recommended): When a timestamp/content collision occurs, sync halts and asks you which version to keep.

Use Local Version: Overwrites the cloud copy with your local tablet version.

Use Cloud Version: Discards local changes and replaces the document with the cloud version.

Keep Both Versions: Preserves your local file and downloads the cloud file with a conflict timestamp suffix.

Inspect waiting unresolved items anytime via the Sync Conflicts button.

Keywords:#conflict#ask user#merge#collision#cloud sync

How does automated project backup differ from sync?
